- Why you should use Mediabank to make rough cuts (clips).
- How to create a cliplist
- How to use an existing cliplist
- How to create a clip (rough cut)
Why use cliplists in Mediabank?
Mediabank offers excellent tools to do your rough cuts. Using clip lists, downloading your selected parts of an asset(s) will decrease the number of minutes downloaded and significantly lower the download cost and time. It also enables you to download all the selected clips in one operation. You can even share the cliplist in Mediabank and make it available to your colleagues.
Extracting rough cuts (highlights) from a sports event can be done in two ways.
1. Download the asset containing the sports event and start clipping locally.
2. Download only the selected highlights you need.
Option two (2) is recommended for several reasons unless you need the whole sports event. Option one (1) will add minutes of download time but, most importantly, increase your download cost. Especially if you need media content (clips) from several assets.
The cliplist feature is available from workspaces 4 & 5 (Event workspaces). Creating Clips from the Event application is only available to Professional and Enterprise price-plan customers.
The primary modules in use when working with cliplists are:
- Asset list
- Mediaplayer
- Navigation module
- Metamodule containing the cliplists
- M-box used for export or publishing (not visible in the below image)
Selecting or creating a cliplist.
Create a new cliplist.
Before making clips, you need a place to store and organize them.
- Go to tabs (workspace) 4 or 5, named "Event view" and "Event view wide" at the top of your screen.
- Locate the metamodule and select the Cliplist tab.
- Locate the +New/Open tab and click to open the Cliplist handling dialog.
- Click Make new cliplist.
- Cliplist name - Create a name for the cliplist.
- Description - Provide a description that reflects the content.
- Select privacy:
- Private - The cliplist is visible to you only.
- Group - The cliplist can be shared with the selected group(s) from the drop-down menu.
- Public - Visible to users accessing Workspace 4 and 5 (Event application).
- Click Create list
- An empty cliplist is created and made visible from the cliplist tabs.
Open an existing cliplist.
- Go to tabs (workspace) 4 or 5, named "Event view" and "Event view wide" at the top of your screen.
- Locate the metamodule and select the Cliplist feature.
- Locate the +New/Open tab and click to open a new Cliplist handling dialog.
- All lists - Existing cliplists the user is granted access to are listed here. The user can use another colleague's cliplist by clicking on it once and pressing Load in tab. The "eye" icon indicates if the cliplist is visible from the cliplist tab. Clicking the Duplicate button initiates Mediabank to make a duplicate, adding -copy to the existing cliplist name and making it visible in the cliplist tabs. The Edit button enables the user to rename and/or change the description to the cliplist.
Create your first cliplist entry and save it to the cliplist
- Select Workspace 4 or 5 (Event workspaces). Make sure an asset is selected from the asset list. It is immediately loaded into the Mediaplayer.
- Select an active cliplist from the cliplist tab or search for an existing cliplist and make it active by pressing the Load in tab button.
- The active cliplist is recognizable by its slightly bold text and an X next to its name. Clicking on the X removes the cliplist from the metamodule. The removed cliplist is still intact, and by clicking +New/Open, it can be found under the All lists section. Select the cliplist and click the Load in tab to make it active and visible from the metamodule again.
- Use the navigation controls located below the mediaplayer window to select the clip start position. Press the IN button next to the left timecode. Then choose the clip's end position, and press the OUT button next to the timecode on the right side.
- Add the title or description.
- Ensure the correct cliplist is visible in the cliplist button below the clip entry title, and click to make it active.
- Press Execute to save the cliplist entry to the cliplist.

Adjusting a cliplist entry.
Occasionally, a cliplist entry needs to be adjusted.
- From the metamodule:
- Click once on the desired cliplist entry.
- Click the Load Clip button located below the cliplist entries
- From the navigation module
- Adjust the clip to the correct time code or frame and press the adjusted IN or OUT position.
- Click the Adjust button above the selected Cliplist to update.
- The cliplist entry is now edited and saved with its new timecode preferences.
Changing the sequence of the clip list entries.
In Mediabank, you can "stitch" your clips into one media file vs. downloading them separately. When stitching, you may want to place related clips in a sequence and continue with other related clips throughout the asset (media file).
To do so, you need to organize your clips in the cliplist in the sequence you want them to be stitched.
To move a cliplist entry up or down the active cliplist is easy.
- Click and continue to hold the left mouse button on the desired cliplist entry and move it up or down.
- When aligned, release the mouse button. The cliplist is automatically updated and saved.
Different ways to load a clip entry into the mediaplayer.
- Click on a cliplist entry to select it.
- The asset loads into the mediaplayer and aligns the start position from the actual IN position. Pressing play will start the player, and it continues to play until the end of the asset or when another navigation button is pressed.
- Or, click on a cliplist entry and press the View Clip button.
- The asset loads into the mediaplayer, start playing from the actual IN timecode and stops at the OUT timecode.
- Or, click on a cliplist entry and press the Load clip button
- The asset loads into the mediaplayer with its data, ready to be edited.
Adding the cliplist or its selected cliplist entries to an M-box.
When the cliplist (EDL) is completed, the rough cut is ready to be exported or published.
- Start by selecting the desired cliplist entries by clicking the "tic boxes" to the left of the cliplist entry, or select them all by clicking the IN box at the top.
- Once a cliplist entry is selected, the Add to M-box button is enabled.
- On the bottom left side of the cliplist window, Mediabank reveals how many selected clips and the total duration of the clips.
- Press the Add to M-box button to view the Mbox bar.
- Note that the Quicklink M-box is unavailable for this use.
- Select an M-box with a click of the mouse button.
- The cliplist entries are added to the selected M-box, visualized by the number of clip entries.
It is possible at this stage to select another cliplist and export the selected cliplist entries to the same M-box. These cliplist entries are added to the existing cliplist entries.
Managing the cliplist entries in the M-box and initiating them.
Several options are available to edit the cliplist before pressing Execute.
- Change the name of the final clip, or add a common prefix to the final clips.
- Stitch the cliplist entries into a single clip
- Add additional recipients to be notified by selecting a notification list.
- The sender and the default destination recipient are always notified during the process.
- Change the sequence of the cliplist entries. It is possible to make the final rearrangements to the sequence of the cliplist entries. This is done by following the same procedure described earlier in the article.
- Remove a cliplist entry from the M-box by clicking the X button on the right side of the cliplist entries.
The total length of the M-box media content is calculated and displayed. At this final stage, three options are available:
- Close - leave the M-box ready to add additional cliplist entries.
- Empty the M-box - Clear the M-box by removing all entries. The original cliplist(s) is intact.
- Execute - Pressing execute will activate the following:
- The cliplist entries are converted to a single clip or multiple clips, dependent on the choice.
- The clips are encoded and adjusted to the recipient's media format requirements.
- The M-box handles the login procedures/security.
- A status message is sent to the default receivers and the users in the optional notification list.
